Choosing a plan

Do I need hotspot on my travel eSIM?

When hotspot matters on a travel eSIM, how much data a tethered laptop can use, how to check the hotspot line on the plan card, and how to keep a laptop from draining the plan.

The short answer

You need hotspot on your travel eSIM if a laptop, tablet or second phone will use the connection at any point in the trip. Read the hotspot line on the plan card before you buy, then size the plan for the laptop's use as well as the phone's, because a laptop pulls updates, backups and video calls that a phone does not. Turn off automatic updates and cloud sync on the laptop before you tether.

Hotspot is the setting that turns your phone into a small Wi-Fi router. The laptop connects to the phone, and the phone's travel plan carries the laptop's traffic. It is the difference between a working day and a lost one, and it is one line on the plan card.

Who actually needs hotspot?

Anyone who will open a laptop away from Wi-Fi. That includes the person who plans to work from cafes, the person who only needs it once for a check-in that will not load on the phone, and the family where one phone feeds a child's tablet on the train.

If your whole trip is phone-only, skip the rest of this and buy the plan that fits your phone use.

How do I know a plan includes it?

Read the card. WayfarerSIM plan cards show hotspot as included or not before checkout, on both fixed-data and unlimited plans. Some sellers allow hotspot with a separate tethering cap; if the card mentions a tethering allowance, that smaller number is your laptop's budget.

Your phone also has to allow it. Apple's Personal Hotspot guide and Pixel's dual-SIM guide, linked below, show where the setting lives and how a second line interacts with it.

How much data does a tethered laptop use?

More than you think, and mostly without asking. A laptop on a fresh connection tries to download system updates, sync cloud folders, back up photos and refresh every open tab. A video call for an hour uses far more than an hour of phone maps. None of this shows up in your phone's own data history, so an estimate built from phone use alone will be short.

Estimate the laptop separately. Count the hours of video calls, the files you will send and the tabs you live in. Then add that to the phone estimate from our data guide.

Fixed data or unlimited for tethering?

If the laptop hours are few and predictable, a larger fixed plan sized for both devices works, and the per-gigabyte rate printed on the card tells you what the extra size costs. If the laptop is your office for the trip, an unlimited plan with a daily high-speed allowance is easier to live with, because a heavy day slows down instead of stopping. Our unlimited or fixed guide has the test.

How do I stop the laptop eating the plan?

Before you tether, turn off automatic operating system updates, pause cloud sync and photo backup, and close the tabs you are not using. On the phone, mark the hotspot connection as metered or low-data if the laptop supports that setting; many laptops then hold back large downloads on their own.

Check the plan's remaining data after each laptop session. The plan's usage information is the reference; the phone's own counter may not count tethered traffic the same way.

What if I only need it once?

Buy the plan with hotspot anyway. The one time is usually the airline app, the rental car form or the bank page that refuses to load on a phone, and it happens when there is no Wi-Fi. On WayfarerSIM, hotspot is shown on the card, so the cost of being ready is visible before you decide.
